The apps to make friends that stay furthest from dating are built around an activity or a group rather than a stream of faces: Rimeso for a small circle with a daily question, Meetup for hobby groups, Timeleft for tables of strangers and Slowly for letters. If you're after apps to make friends, not dating, judge them by how they work. An app that shows you one face at a time, lets you filter by gender and asks what you're looking for in a person is working like a dating app, whatever its store page says.

The short answer

  • Judge the mechanics. The word "friendship" costs nothing to put on a store page.
  • Four signs of a dating design: a deck of faces, a gender filter up front, romantic prompts and paying for attention. One alone proves little. Three together tell you what the app is for.
  • Groups and activities leave the least room for pairing off, because you're there for the thing itself.
  • Any app with private chat can attract flirting. Have a sentence ready, and use block and report.

We make Rimeso, so we're not neutral about it. We've tried to be fair about what each app is good at, including where others are the better choice.

Why so many apps to make friends feel like dating apps

Dating apps taught all of us the same habit: look at a face, decide in a second, move on. That design is cheap to copy and easy to understand, so plenty of apps for meeting people borrow it. The trouble is what it sorts by. A swipe asks whether you like the look of someone. Friendship usually starts somewhere else entirely, with a shared activity, a similar sense of humour or the same complaint about the same bus.

So the mismatch often has little to do with bad intentions. Put strangers in a dating-style layout, and many of them will behave as if it's a dating app.

How to spot a friendship app that works like dating

A deck of faces, one at a time

The first screen is a full-size photo and two choices. This is the clearest sign, though it isn't proof on its own. Some apps built only for friends use swiping too, so read it alongside the signs below.

A gender filter up front

Wanting a same-gender friend is perfectly reasonable, and women-only groups exist for good reasons. What you're looking for is a gender switch as the main control, or one you're asked to pay for. That tells you the app expects people to choose others by gender, which is a dating habit.

Prompts that read like a first date

Watch for relationship status, height, "what I'm looking for in someone" or "my ideal Sunday with you". Prompts built for friendship ask what you do on weekends, what you're reading and what you're bad at. If you could paste the profile into a dating app and nobody would notice, take the hint.

You pay for attention

Check what the paid plan sells. Boosts, extra likes and seeing who liked you are all about getting noticed by one person, and that's a dating business. Friendship services that charge tend to charge for access: an event, a table or a group.

Pairing off is the only thing to do

If the app offers nothing besides a private chat with a stranger, there's no group, no activity and nothing to talk about except each other. That's the set-up of a date, even if nobody calls it one.

The store page gives it away

Screenshots of single attractive faces say more than the description does. So do recent reviews. Scan them for words such as date, flirt, creepy and coins, and see what comes up more than once.

💡 The five-minute test: before you sign up, read the first two lines of the store description, look at the screenshots, scan ten recent reviews, open the paid plan and see whether you can use the app without uploading a photo. That tells you most of what you need.

Non dating apps to meet people: what holds up

We checked these in November 2026. They're grouped by what they put in the middle, because that's what keeps things friendly.

Built around a group or an activity

Meetup is the widest choice. You join a group about something you like and turn up, so you're there for the board games or the hiking. Some groups are for singles, and the description will say so. parkrun isn't an app at all: it's a free 5 km run or walk on Saturday mornings in 23 countries (Reuters via FBC News, 2026). There's no profile for anyone to look at.

Built around a table

Timeleft places you with a small group of strangers for dinner, drinks, coffee or a walk. It says there's no swiping, no pairing off and no private messaging before you meet (Timeleft FAQ). Many cities also run separate singles dinners, so check which event you're booking.

Built around words

Slowly is the purest case on this list. You write letters that take hours or days to arrive, and you appear as an avatar with no photo or real name (App Store). HelloTalk and Tandem give two strangers a job to do, which is teaching each other a language. As on any open chat app, some people use them for other reasons, so block freely.

Rimeso is ours. It matches you into a small circle by interests, language, age group and country, and looks don't come into it. Everyone answers the same question each day, so you get to know people by what they say. Private chat exists, and you can block or report someone and turn off messages from others. It has real limits: Android only with no iPhone version yet, conversation in English or Hindi, online only, and it's young, so some circles are quiet.

Built around a stage of life

Peanut is for mothers and InterNations is for people living abroad. Having the same problem to solve gives you something better to talk about than each other. Our list of the best apps to make friends covers all of these in more detail.

The mixed cases, in fairness

A few well-known apps don't fit neatly, and none of this is a criticism. You just deserve to know what you're walking into.

  • Bumble BFF comes from the company behind a dating app and uses swiping for one-to-one matches. It's still a friendship app through and through, which is why a swipe alone doesn't settle anything. If swiping is the part you dislike, our Bumble BFF alternatives avoid it.
  • 222 says on its App Store page that it isn't a dating app. Global Dating Insights reported in March 2026 that its users split roughly evenly between people seeking friends and people open to romance. Fine if you're relaxed about that, less so if you want strictly friends.
  • Timeleft keeps romance out of its standard tables and offers singles dinners separately, so read the event name. Our guide to Timeleft alternatives compares similar options.

Can you use a dating app to make friends?

You can, and some people do. Write "friends only" at the top of your bio and be ready to repeat it. You'll spend a lot of time explaining yourself to people who came for something else, and that's tiring when you're already putting yourself out there. A platonic friendship app saves you that conversation before it starts, because everyone arrived for the same reason.

What to say when a friendship chat turns romantic

It will happen sooner or later, even on the good apps. Decide what you'll say now, so you don't have to work it out when you feel awkward.

  1. If it's mild: "That's kind, but I'm only here for friends. Still happy to chat about the hiking."
  2. If it continues: "I'm looking for friendship, so I'm going to leave this here. Take care."
  3. If it's pushy, or it's sexual: say nothing further. Block and report. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
  4. If someone asks for money, photos or a move to another app within a day or two: stop there and block them, whatever the story is.

It also helps to steer towards settings that keep things friendly. Suggest daytime, a group or an activity, and a public place. "A few of us go to the Sunday market, come along" sends a very different signal from "want to get a drink, just us?" If you're talking to someone online for a while first, our guide to making friends online covers how to do it safely.

Finding the right app is the easy part. The friendship still comes from turning up again and again. In one study, it took about 50 hours together to become casual friends (Hall, 2018). An app that gets you into the same room, or the same conversation, week after week will do more for you than one with a clever matching system.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good app to meet people without dating?

Rimeso puts you in a small circle with a daily question, on Android only. Meetup is the widest choice for groups built around a hobby, Timeleft books a table of strangers, and Slowly works through letters. In each one, the activity or the conversation comes before anyone's photo.

Is Bumble BFF a dating app?

No. BFF is a friendship app from the company behind the Bumble dating app. It does use swiping for one-to-one matches, which puts some people off, but its purpose is finding friends.

How can I tell if a friendship app is really a dating app?

Look at how it works. A deck of faces, a prominent gender filter, romantic profile prompts and paid boosts together point to a dating design, whatever the store page says. One of these alone proves little.

Are there friendship apps with no swiping?

Yes. Meetup, Timeleft, Slowly and Rimeso all work without swiping. So does parkrun, which is a free weekly event and needs no app.

Is Rimeso a dating app?

No. Rimeso is a friendship app. It matches you into a small circle by interests, language, age group and country, and you can block or report anyone and turn off messages from others.
